Kathleen Folbigg will spend her first night in a regular bed in 20 years, after being released from prison. 7NEWS
Making a cup of tea, and hugging longtime friend and fierce supporter Tracey Chapman at her Glenreagh home — Folbigg’s simple first acts of freedom were made profound by the fact of a 25-year sentence almost entirely served. She arrived at Chapman’s house with just the clothes on her back, and plans to spend her first night outside of jail enjoying a T-bone steak and relaxing in brand-new pyjamas.
A second inquiry into her convictions heard new scientific and psychiatric evidence that led inquiry chair Chief Justice Tom Bathurst to hold the “firm view that there was reasonable doubt as to the guilt of Ms Folbigg for each of the offences for which she was originally tried.”Credit:In a statement following the pardon, Chapman thanked everyone who had been involved in the battle for Folbigg’s freedom.
“Patrick, despite all his medical issues with epilepsy and blindness, was focused on discovering the world around him through his hands. “This case should reignite the discussion to strengthen the interactions between law and science, to make important reforms so that the legal system makes decisions based on the best scientific evidence available, not speculation.
“I think we all have to do put ourselves in her shoes and let her now have the space that she needs to get on with her life,” Daley told reporters.Have her convictions been quashed?
