There were at least a dozen specific incidents between 1977 and 1979, when she worked at a Catholic school as a lay teacher and treated the then-10-year-old boy as "teacher's pet", according to the sentencing judge.
"I am of the view that notwithstanding the egregious and abhorrent nature of the appellant's conduct, the decision in Lam makes it clear that a miscarriage of justice has occurred in this case," she said. She acknowledged the "significant distress no doubt being experienced by the victim" following Ms Grant's admissions.Helga Lam had been due to face a trial in the NSW District Court after pleading not guilty over allegations she sexually abused four underage boys, also in the late 70s.
It wasn't until 2021 that the victim went to police and had contact again with Ms Grant in a secretly-recorded phone call.
