Former Commonwealth champion Jana Pittman is no stranger to high-stress situations. But the hurdler turned doctor says working in Blacktown Hospital’s emergency department as coronavirus cases rose in western Sydney last year was one of the most intense experiences of her life.
“Not winning gold at the Olympics meant that I really didn’t want to miss out on this second childhood goal,” she said. Pittman ran fifth in the 2004 Games in Athens after undergoing surgery a week prior and pulled out of the 2008 Beijing Games due to injury.Jana Pittman “I was a little bit shocked at how little funding the hospital had, considering the higher risk nature of the women and babies who come through the hospital,” she said. “We rely so heavily on the foundation to fundraise for our equipment.”
“It is the mother guilt I’ll have to work to overcome, going to work for long days and leaving the babies at home.”
