Communications Minister Paul Fletcher says tech giants are failing to meet the expectations of users' online safety and will announce the introduction of a national Online Safety Charter at the National Press Club on Wednesday.

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher says tech giants are failing to meet the expectations of users' online safety and will announce the introduction of a national Online Safety Charter at the National Press Club on Wednesday.

The proposed online safety act would force social media companies to remove harmful or extremist content within 24 hours, not 48 hours as it currently stands. The initiative is expected to bring increased protections for children against cyber bullying, and improve ways to combat abuse posted online
