The Greens have called out Labor for the continuation of Scott Morrison's policy in turning back asylum seeker boats, calling the decision to send back a boatload of refugees to Sri Lanka as 'unnecessary and ineffective'.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles confirmed to Sky News Australia a boatload of Sri Lankan refugees, who were intercepted on the day of the Federal Election, was safely turned back to the southern Asian nation under Operation Sovereign Borders.
Operation Sovereign Borders commander Justin Jones said each asylum seeker was given a thorough screening to check their health and a protection status was completed before they were sent back home. "Australians voted for change and deserve so much better than a shameful continuation of Scott Morrison's brutal policy," he said.
Border policy became one of the major talking points in the six-week election campaign and even on the day Australians headed to the polls around the country.
