‘Heartbroken’: Government dumps promised Barangaroo cultural centre | LindaMorrissmh
A Sydney Indigenous leader says he is heartbroken after the NSW government dumped plans for a national Indigenous cultural centre based at The Cutaway in Barangaroo.
This is despite the completion of concept designs for the centre a year ago, backed by a specially formed taskforce comprising renowned arts executives Wesley Enoch and Rhoda Roberts, Sydney Opera House’s first head of First Nations programming. “Ultimately, First Nations people are not in the decision-making positions, whether that’s money or political will or an opportunity to build. That’s a decision for others.”Nathan Moran, chief executive of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, and a participant of the Aboriginal Cultural Space Taskforce which guided the designs, said he “felt deeply let down” and “heartbroken” the centre had not been supported.
Last week Minister for Cities, Rob Stokes, announced a fit-out of the underutilised void for a mix of events, education, art, and entertainment. FJMT Studio has been appointed architects and a final design decision is due next year. Museum of Sydney, the site of Australia’s first Government House,“While not a dedicated Aboriginal Cultural Centre, the latest concept design for the Cutaway will continue to celebrate First Nations people and culture,” a spokesperson for Infrastructure NSW said.
Given strong tourism demand for unique cultural experiences, Moran said a KPMG business case had demonstrated the centre to be an effective use of public money with a return on taxpayer investment.
