The recent homophobic slur made by Jeremy Finlayson in the AFL has sparked widespread controversy and dominated news headlines. The incident has led to discussions about the use of derogatory language and the reaction to such incidents in the sporting world.

Apologies if you sense I’m a little low just now on energy. It’s been sapped by Jeremy Finlayson. By reading dozens of stories about his homophobic slur , seeing Kochie shake his fist over it, talking about it with my husband over dinner.took up four days of the AFL ’s time, dominated talkback radio and topped news sites when the three-week suspension was announced. Grave-faced TV panellists dissected how unsavoury it is in these enlightened times to use a name that denigrates someone’s sexuality.

The national attention AFL players get when hurt physically or emotionally doing their job – playing a full contact sport that relishes hard men until someone gets taken to sick bay – is a stark contrast to the routine couple of paragraphs many women merit when they get bashed and killed. The Ballarat response echoes how various communities rallied when Jesse Baird and Luke Davies were killed in March, allegedly by a man. Their loss was mourned with a minute’s silence at an AFL game, TV heads teared up on air, countless pieces were written in loving remembrance or to share latest details.

I’ve written much of this before so sorry not sorry if you know the gist, but I’m just chipping away here.Do we care more when violence happens to men? Do we care more when a man is injured in a workplace instead of a woman getting stabbed, burned, shot, tortured, mutilated or humiliated in her home? When Point Cook mother Chaithanya Madhagani was killed and stuffed into a wheelie bin last month, why weren’t TV segments dedicated to discussing a fitting punishment? She died.
