Opinion: How much will it cost me to ditch gas entirely? | Joel Gibson
With gas prices through the roof and fossil fuels on the nose, some of us have started ripping out gas appliances for a mixture of money saving and planet-saving reasons. The transition cost is a major hurdle. If you replaced three gas appliances – heating, hot water and cooking – all at once, it adds up to about $4000-$5000 for average-priced appliances and at least a few thousand dollars for installation.
They estimate that replacing the three appliances would save an average home around $9500 on energy costs over the 12-year life of the appliances and remove about 22.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That would leave you slightly ahead financially, and way ahead in terms of emissions and health – another factor for many households.study in 2018 found cooking with gas increases the burden of asthma in kids by about 12 per cent – equivalent to having a smoker in the home.
The Victorian Energy Upgrades program offers households up to $6600 back on new energy efficient appliances but does not push electric over gas. In fact, the biggest rebate is on new ducted gas heating.
