The NSW Law Society will for the first time provide the state's 35,000 solicitors with a mental health support service in response to pressures including the coronavirus pandemic, bushfires and floods | AnnaPattySMH
At the age of 36, Malcolm Gittoes-Caesar was unable to switch off from his work as a family law solicitor in a busy Sydney legal practice.
As the pressure and stress continued to build, Mr Gittoes-Caesar started to cut himself off - from his family and his clients. He says he started avoiding clients and phone calls. The NSW Law Society will on Monday launch a new mental health support service that will provide solicitors access to up to three free confidential sessions with a psychologist each year. Telephone counselling will also be available for solicitors in distress.
"It's possible that some members of the legal profession will be at heightened risk due to the unpredictability about the scale, duration and impact of COVID-19, along with other factors such as the challenges of working remotely, lack of regular exercise and restricted social engagement. "Solicitors are very much part of the communities they serve and when you have bushfires, drought, floods and then COVID-19, it hits hard," he said.
As the principal and director at Coleman Greig Lawyers in Parramatta, Mr Gittoes-Caesar now makes a point of drawing a clear line between work and home life.
