Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton clashed in Parliament over the axing of the cashless debit card, with the Opposition Leader accusing the Prime Minister of pleasing 'an inner city woke audience'.

Mr Dutton opened proceedings by claiming Mr Albanese was pandering to an"inner city woke audience" by axing the welfare measure.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton attacked the government in Parliament on Thursday over the cashless debit card. Picture: Martin Ollman/Getty Images Mr Albanese hit back, saying Labor was making good on an election promise and arguing the card amounted to a privatisation of Australia's welfare system. "Whereby for the first time, we had a welfare system that was paying a private company to engage in activity with profit motive.

"Those opposite have insisted the University of Adelaide report in January supported the cashless debit card. What they have failed to point out is that the evidence was inconclusive," Ms Rishworth said. "And that a large proportion of CDC participants reported their quality of life was affected in a negative way."
