The fatal shooting of an Indigenous man at a property in Newcastle last year was 'fast and totally unexpected,' an inquest has heard. The Deputy State Coroner will deliver her findings at a later date.
The shooting occurred while police attended Bishopsgate Street, in Wickham, responding to reports of theft.The inquest into a fatal police shooting in Newcastle has heard the discharge of the firearm was "necessary, reasonable and consistent" with police procedure.
The inquest heard that after initially being "calm and compliant" during an arrest Mr Simon pulled a 12cm kitchen knife from his pants and lunged at one police officer, stabbing him near his shoulder. Counsel assisting said the discharge of the weapon was "necessary, reasonable and consistent" with police procedure.Counsel for the Commissioner of Police, Anders Mykkeltvedt, agreed."Ultimately, he discharged his firearm because he had no other choice," he said.
