Residents near Lithgow are doing all they can to prepare their homes as nearby fires threaten to get closer as conditions worsen.
As the sun sets over Mark and Vickey Chapman’s house in Capertee, kangaroos drink from a nearby dam. They’ve been building the place for the last five years, making it the perfect home.
"One will hit here, but we don’t know which one," he said. "I feel alright at the moment but you don’t know what’s going to happen - we’ll have to wait until it happens."What happens happens. It will be devastating but what can you do." While Mr Chapman will stay and defend the property for as long as he can, Ms Chapman has her truck and a caravan packed with their most precious possessions, including wedding photos and drawings from the grandchildren.Mark Chapman checks the fire pump set up on his ute.Volunteer firefighter from the Ilford and Running Stream brigade Scott Spiers said he’ll probably be fighting the fires until after New Year, but the community’s support was invaluable in keeping him going.
"Those concerns have not only been passed onto Lithgow Fire Control and Mudgee – the folks there are listening."They are keeping a close watch on Capertee Valley. The calvary is poised and if things deteriorate, resources will be certainly ramped out.
