Police said Yamagami was responding calmly to questions and had admitted to attacking Abe, telling investigators he had plotted to kill him because he believed rumours about the former leader’s connection to a certain organisation that police did not identify.The death of Japan’s most influential political figure shook a nation where gun crime is virtually unheard of and political assassinations are rare.
“I use the harshest words to condemn ,” Kishida said, struggling to control his emotions. He said the government planned to review the security situation, but added that Abe had the highest protection. Television footage showed images of Mr Abe collapsed on the street. Images on social media also showed suited security officers tackling a man believed to be the shooter to the ground. Two gunshots were heard at the scene of the attack.
