The National Police Agency's chief resigns after a report finds protection failures gave Shinzo Abe's alleged assassin the chance to shoot the former Japanese prime minister in the back.

Japan's national police chief will resign over the fatal shooting of the country's former prime minister, Shinzo Abe, at a campaign speech last month.Japan's police chief, Itaru Nakamuraha, said he would take responsibility for Mr Abe's assassinationA report found holes in his police protection allowed the assassination to take place

National Police Agency chief Itaru Nakamura announced he would take responsibility for the assassination, after his agency released a report on how it failed to protect Mr Abe when he was shot in Nara, in western Japan, on July 8. The police report found holes in Mr Abe's police protection allowed the alleged attacker to shoot him from behind. The alleged gunman, Tetsuya Yamagami, was arrested at the scene and is currently under mental evaluation until late November.

Mr Yamagami told police he targeted Mr Abe because of the former leader's links to the Unification Church, which he hated. Mr Abe's family paid tribute to him in a private Buddhist ritual on Thursday, marking the 49th day after his assassination.
