US President Joe Biden delivers an impassioned plea for politicians to restore limits on the sale of assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines after a string of mass shootings in the country.

And those shootings came after the May 14 attack in Buffalo, New York, where a white 18-year-old wearing military gear opened fire with a rifle at a supermarket in a predominantly black neighbourhood, killing 10 people and injuring three others in what authorities described as "racially motivated violent extremism".All major broadcast networks broke away from regular programming to carry Mr Biden's address, before the start of prime-time shows.

"If we can't ban assault weapons, we should raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21, strengthen the background checks and enact storage and red-flag laws, repeal the immunity that protects gun manufacturers from liability [and] address the mental-health crisis," Mr Biden said. "We should reinstate the assault-weapons ban on high-capacity magazines that we passed in 1994 with bipartisan support in Congress and the support of law enforcement.Mr Biden has used national speeches in the past to speak about the coronavirus pandemic and the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan.
