No country brings out the international law armchair experts like Israel.
Although many nations recognised Israel’s right to defend itself after the atrocities on October 7 it did not take long for the usual rhetoric to emanate from politicians, journalists and social media warriors.
There can be no doubt this constitutes an “armed attack” for the purposes of international law, for which Israel is lawfully entitled to exercise the well-recognised right to self-defence.Proportionality is oft misunderstood. From the outset, IDF officials have made it clear they intend to ensure Hamas is sufficiently weakened so it is unable to ever carry out a similar attack on Israeli civilians again.Hamas openly calls for the destruction of Israel and murder of its Jewish citizens, and no sane person could expect Israel to allow Hamas to continue operating in Gaza with the ability to commit further atrocities.
The reality on the ground is Hamas hides its fighters and weapons among civilians and launches rockets at Israel from hospitals and residential areas.Nevertheless, Israel has taken significant precautions in order to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza.
