Premier Jacinta Allan has moved to reassure Victorians they can “continue cooking with gas” as the government pushes ahead with plans to reduce the role of gas in the state’s energy grid.
Jacinta Allan has moved to reassure Victoria ns they can"continue cooking with gas" as Labor moves ahead with its"gas substitution roadmap", but the Premier refused to provide the same certainty of other gas appliances.
“I'm wanting to be really clear that Victorians can continue to keep cooking with gas on their existing gas stove, and if they need to replace it, they will be able to do so,” Premier Allan said in a press conference. The Premier’s comments come as reports revealed the government had specifically excluded a phase-out of gas cooktops from being included as part of the gas substitution roadmap, which could otherwise have forced households to replace expiring or broken appliances with electric models.
“We know that we need to do everything we can to support those households and businesses who can transition to all-electric to do so, because it maintains gas supply for those households and businesses who need to remain connected to gas,” she said. Asked if Victorians could be reassured they would also be able to continue using gas hot water systems and gas heating systems into the future as well, Premier Allan said:"No… we are wanting to make it clear to Victorians that they can continue to keep cooking with gas."
