Labor demands Uber shape up or shut down | nickbonyhady

A spokeswoman for Transport Minister Andrew Constance did not directly answer Mr Mookhey’s challenge, instead saying safety was the top priority for the government for any mode of transport.

“The Point to Point Transport Commission regularly conducts safety audits to ensure all providers, including taxis, hire vehicles and rideshare providers, are complying with the law,” the spokeswoman said.An Uber spokeswoman said the company valued safety, cooperated with the commission and self-identified the unreported safety incidents after conducting its own audit.

Transport Workers Union national secretary Michael Kaine, who has long campaigned for a dedicated federal regulator to oversee Uber and other gig economy companies, lashed the NSW government’s response, saying the fine was too little, too late. “The safety breaches uncovered are serious, alarming in number, and put lives in danger, but the fine is a slap on the wrist that won’t even register a blip on the Uber balance sheet,” Mr Kaine said.

“It will be written off as the cost of doing business: the cashed-up Silicon Valley giant will sign the cheque and continue the cycle of exploitation that is injuring and killing people in the deadly pursuit of profits. How many Australian workers need to be seriously hurt or die before governments actually take on these corporate bullies?”
