Labor’s bid to slash 20 per cent of student debt if re-elected at the next federal election is a sign the Albanese government has “given up on the fight against inflation”, the Coalition has stated in a blistering attack.

Sarah Henderson , Angus Taylor slam Labor ’s promise to wipe 20 per cent of student debt if elected at next election

However, Labor’s move was lambasted by shadow treasurer Angus Taylor and shadow education minister Sarah Henderson who claimed the Albanese government had failed to “address the cost-of-living crisis facing all Australians at its source”. Mr Taylor claimed"every Australian will continue to pay the price for Labor’s high interest rate, high inflation environment – but only a few will see the benefits" when discussing the student debt pledge. Under Labor’s scheme, those with a HECS debt of $27,000 – the average student loan debt – will save $5,000 because of the change, while Australians with a student debt of $50,000 will save $10,000.
