OPINION: All Australians, including Labor-affiliated non-law abiding unions, should be treated equally under the law, and not get handed free passes because of their political connections.
What is Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke’s plan for upholding the rule of law against the thuggish law-breaking of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union, now that he has capitulated to Labor’s union paymasters byMr Burke says that winding back the powers of the ABCC and abolishing the building code is about treating all unions equally.
Last month, in an action brought by the ABCC, the Federal Court fined the CFMEU $840,000 for coercing a crane company over the appointment of a health and safety delegate by threatening unlawful strikes at Brisbane construction sites. The monopoly that the industrial relations system grants to unions to represent workers in award determinations and enterprise bargaining negotiations is the supposed “new province for law and order”. But at the same time, the CFMEU flouts any law that does not suit it.
The Hobson’s choice was either to give in to the industrial Stockholm syndrome or risk costly project disruptions and project delays brought on by a union whose mafia-style bullying and intimidation tactics show no respect for the law.
