Liberal MP Philip Thompson says he is donating 10 per cent of his monthly salary to Food Relief NQ because he doesn’t want people in his local community to be thinking “is it utilities or rent, or food”.

Mr Thompson said he realised he couldn’t control the independent body that looks after politicians’ wages “but I can control my salary,” and decided to assist them thousands in Townsville who have “lost their jobs or had their hours cut”. He told Sky News host Paul Murray he would like to see people who are in similar positions as him “to be able to if they can, donate to local charities because we need to be in this together”.
