The ghost of Terry Metherell still haunts the NSW Liberals. Metherell was a former education minister who moved to the crossbench in a huff – after announcing his defection on live television – only to be offered a plum public sector job. That offer ended the premiership of former Liberal premier Nick Greiner, the first of three Liberal premiers to be toppled by the Independent Commission Against Corruption .

Barilaro, a gifted retail politician with an undeniable passion for regional NSW, had been a thorn in the side of many within government, not least Berejiklian. The pair’s working relationship had all but broken down by the time they left politics, with her bemoaning to colleagues that he bullied her.

Former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro has been appointed to the plum role of US trade commissioner.Barilaro applied – after complaining to colleagues about having to go through the process. And, following what Perrottet has described as a global recruitment search run by Investment NSW, Barilaro emerged on the shortlist of preferred candidates. Investment NSW chief executive Amy Brown, who used to report to Barilaro as trade minister, gave him the job.
