The Australian Antarctic Division sets a goal for making all Antarctic research stations gender balanced.
A winter on Macquarie Island can be challenging for the most seasoned expeditioner, but according to research station leader Kat Panjari, this year's winter was a huge success.
"So I feel really privileged to have led that team and I must say it worked really well and we had such a fantastic season," she said. As well as there being a female station leader, there was a female field training officer and a female ranger in charge.
