Stuart Irvine, the outgoing CEO of Lion, says customers want companies to take major steps to reduce carbon emissions. But it’s a tougher challenge than most for the brewer.
Stuart Irvine is looking forward to a break. It’s been almost 10 years since the British-born executive left the UK for Sydney to take the helm at Lion. And this week, the executive walked out of the 180-year-old drinks giant’s headquarters for the last time as part ofHis tenure at the brewer responsible for Tooheys, Little Creatures, Furphy and XXXX Gold has been characterised by huge asset sales and purchases.Pioneering Aussie craft brewery Little Creatures came into the stable in 2012.
It’s a progressive agenda that is easy to criticise for capitalising on political issues such as equality and the treatment of women at work. But Irvine swears companies can’t retain or gain customers without demonstrating a track record of doing the right thing.A new wave of customers who are politically mobilised and passionate about sustainability are now considering brands’ environmental track records as a matter of course, Irvine said.
But the challenge remains calculating scope 3 emissions, which is the carbon output of the rest of the production process, including the production of bottles and cans, transport, and the energy used to fire barley into malt. ”They’re already well down the process and have a good handle on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, but it will take some time to get the detail [on Scope 3] right,” Irvine said.
