Owners of oversized utes and SUVs may soon face higher parking fees, with a local council in Melbourne’s inner suburbs backing plans to crack down on the vehicles.

Greens councillor Sophie Wade said she was putting forward her motion in an attempt to"discourage these kinds of vehicles on our streets”, adding that they were “not the sort of vehicle that I want to say important on mass into Australia”. “There has been a spate of incidences in the US where people have actually run over their own kids in their own driveways.”
“What is open to me is parking, and so parking is the lever that I’m suggesting that my colleagues join me in taking tonight. And indeed, parking is the lever that Paris has recently taken,” Councillor Wade said. “We’re not talking about Dallas Texas here, we’re talking about Yarra, Melbourne,” Councillor Jolly said.
