The Commonwealth Bank of Australia is facing increasing pressure to remove a fee for cash withdrawals, with one shadow minister declaring she will shut her account.
A shadow minister has declared she will shut her account after Commonwealth Bank announced a new withdrawal fee for its customers starting from next year.
But the Smart Access account will also incur a charge of $3 for each"assisted" withdrawal of cash at a Commonwealth Bank branch, post office or by phone. Housing Minister Clare O'Neil was also critical of the fee, saying the government believed it was"unfair" to Australians already struggling ahead of December 25. Pressed by host Nat Barr if the government would get on the phone to the bank's boss to"do something", Ms O'Neil said it would"try and ask them to reconsider".
