Man charged with deliberately lighting NSW fire, stealing ute | rabe9
Police say the 32-year-old stole a Ford Falcon ute from Freeman’s Waterhole on Friday morning. He was later seen driving dangerously and fled from police after hitting another car.The ute was found ablaze near a Buchanan property later that morning, which caused a grass fire just metres from bushland.
Emergency services were already battling several intense bushfires southwest of Buchanan, including the Little L Complex Fire and the Gospers Mountain blaze, which is larger than the entire city of Sydney.Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, while police arrested the man nearby, before taking him to Maitland Hospital for injuries to his legs.
The man was later released from hospital and charged with stealing a car, intentionally lighting a fire, reckless driving and other offences.A ‘very high’ fire danger is currently in place for the greater Hunter region.
