The offender told WorkCover he had not worked since injuring his back on the job, but he earnt thousands from Uber, Woolworths and Big W jobs in 19 months.

A man who received thousands of dollars in workers’ compensation and tried to get a further $750,000, came undone when he was caught on camera lifting department store stock despite his claimed back injury.

He suffered a back injury on the job in March 2019, and three months later he was diagnosed with depression. Singh also worked at a Woolworths distribution centre, earning more than $35,000 between September 2019 and October 2020. “[The] footage showed you at work at Big W kneeling and squatting down while packing stock on the shelves, packing and unpacking stock on trolleys, and walking around the store,” he said.

“When publicly resourced schemes, like the workers’ compensation scheme, are defrauded, or when people attempt to defraud them, it makes it potentially harder for other people who are truly and genuinely in need to make their claims.”
