Former Manchester United forward Willie Morgan is set to be honoured at Old Trafford for his part in the 1974/75 campaign

Former Manchester United player Willie Morgan is set to be awarded a retrospective league medal for his efforts in helping the club win the Second Division title in the 1974/75 season.

The winger spent seven seasons at Old Trafford, where he became a firm favourite among United supporters. He played a total of 296 appearances for the Reds but didn't receive a winners’ medal for his role in helping the club earn an immediate return to the top-flight. Morgan was part of a promotion-winning United side that featured the likes of Alex Stepney, Lou Macari and Steve Coppell. And the latter, who didn't meet the Football League regulations for a medal that season, took Morgan's by mistake 48 years ago.

So Morgan, 78, will finally be presented with his own medal this weekend. He will collect his honour on the pitch at Old Trafford ahead of United’s home game with Nottingham Forest on Saturday and fans of a certain vintage will enjoy seeing one of their former favourites return to M16.It will not be the first time that Morgan has been retrospectively honoured for his playing days.

Earlier this month, former United player David Sadler was similarly presented with a First Division winners' medal for his part in the 1964/65 campaign. The 1968 European Cup winner initially fell short of the 14 appearances required but a change to EFL rules made him eligible to receive a medal.
