OPINION: Australia’s huge defence spend will demand yet more difficult decisions for the new defence minister in coming months.
When he went to cast his ballot on election day, Peter Dutton engaged in a bit of blink- and-you’ll-miss-it trolling of Scott Morrison.
Morrison though was said to have come around to back Hanwha’s offering, recognising the opportunity to strengthen defence ties with north Asia’s other major democracy and industrial powerhouse amid growing tensions with China. During the campaign, Morrison participated in the sod turning exercise for Hanwha.Anyway, it is all academic. Since May 21, responsibility for procurement decisions now lie with the new Labor government and Defence Minister Richard Marles.
But manufacturer Lockheed Martin also has a vertical take-off and landing version, the F-35B, which is used by the US Marines. Five consortiums are bidding for the project: Airbus, Boeing, Optus, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.
