Sam Matthews goes from tailgater to Texas A&M tackle maker
Stavros Karamitsos, left, says Sam Mathews’ friends urged him to try out at A&M, saying, “You could be out there — that could be you!”COLLEGE STATION — Sam Mathews’ first unofficial role as a Texas A&M “12th Man” occurred at rowdy A&M tailgates before football games — when about 11 of his good-time buddies routinely egged him on to give big-time college football a shot.
Mathews, who played quarterback at Clear Creek five years ago, made six tackles as an A&M safety Saturday in the Aggies’ 41-24 home loss to Florida. “Once we started letting Sam run the ball, he really made a difference in what we did offensively,” Warden recalled. “He wanted to be good, and he worked hard to be good.”
“The guy is an athlete … he can run,” Fisher said. “He’s in the top 5 percent to 10 percent on the team of guys who can run.” “I really just wanted to chase a bigger dream,” Mathews said of why he left Harding with the notion of one day being an Aggie. “I had been a lifelong fan, and I made up my mind and I pursued it head-on.”
