Matildas, Olyroos receive $2.4 million funding boost for Tokyo 2021 | SMHsport
The Matildas and Olyroos have received a huge boost for their preparations for the Tokyo Olympics with a high-performance grant of more than $2.4 million from the Australian Institute of Sport.
Steph Catley of the Matildas, who are the toast of Australian sport after last month's successful bid to co-host the 2023 Women's World Cup.Olyroos coach Graham Arnold called for government funding almost immediately after Australia's under-23 men's team sealed qualification in January to snap a 12-year Olympic drought, appealing to Prime Minister Scott Morrison to help them compete on the international stage.
"It's a fantastic effort for [the Olyroos] to qualify for the first time since 2008, and obviously we're massively proud of our long-standing support for the Matildas and the women's program. They're genuine stars, right at the top of Australian sport," Australian Sports Commission chief John Wylie said.
Wylie acknowledged football's argument and said he was "delighted" the AIS had been able to contribute.
