Drivers in Melbourne's CBD are set to face 'significant delays' in the coming weeks due to road closures arising from a key intersection being upgraded.

A more than two week closure of a busy intersection in Melbourne 's CBD is set to result in drivers facing"significant delays" around the area, while trams will also be disrupted. Victoria Street will be shut to traffic between Elizabeth and Cardigan streets, meaning the Therry, Bouverie and Victoria streets intersection will also be off limits to drivers. Drivers are being encouraged to"take a wide detour to the north through Parkville, south through the CBD or Southbank, and via Nicholson or Peel streets".

Stop 4 Queensberry Street, Stop 7 RMIT University and Stop 8 Melbourne Central Station will all be closed. Route 3 will be a shortened service between East Malvern and Stop 14 Arts Precinct, while routes 5, 16 and 72 will also be shortened services, between the south eastern suburbs and Stop 8 Melbourne Central Station.

While footpaths will remain open, pedestrian crossings will be closed, including on Victoria Street at Bouverie and Swanston streets, and on Franklin and Swanston streets.
