Almost 100 firefighters worked for hours to contain a large fire at a Forty Winks store in Nunawading, Melbourne. A separate grass fire in Port Melbourne also spread to a storage facility.

Investigations are underway into two fires in Melbourne , including one blaze which saw almost 100 firefighters battle the flames for more than three and a half hours. Emergency services evacuated around 30 people on Sunday as firefighters fought two suspicious blazes in Melbourne . Fire crews were first called to a two-storey building on Whitehorse Road in Nunawading, east Melbourne , at about 2.20am following multiple reports of smoke coming from the property.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the building, a Forty Winks outlet, well ablaze, with large volumes of smoke coming from both levels of the two-storey building. In a statement, authorities said almost 100 firefighters and around 26 pieces of equipment were deployed to fight the blaze, with crews attacking the flames using aerial fire trucks. Ambulance Victoria was also in attendance, along with Victoria Police, as between 25 and 30 people were evacuated from nearby homes. Fire crews will remain on the scene throughout the remainder of Sunday, while Whitehorse Road, Nunawading, remains closed in both directions. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, after Fire Rescue Victoria labelled the blaze suspicious. No injuries were reported and the blaze was brought under control around four hours later at 6.28am. Authorities are also probing a separate incident in Port Melbourne, where a grass fire spread to a nearby building shortly before 9pm on Saturday. The blaze spread along the West Gate Freeway at the Todd Road Exit ramp and damaged a nearby storage facility. Smoke and flames were spotted by motorists on the major roadway, with authorities confirming 16 fire trucks were dispatched to fight the blaze
