Fifty years after his father Des first completed the Derwent River Big Swim, Michael 'Murph' Renford has tackled the 34-kilometre ultramarathon event. The 63-year-old completed the swim in just over 7 hours and raised $52,000 for charity.
Michael "Murph" Renford has completed the same 34-kilometre Tasmanian ultramarathon swim his father did 50 years ago.
"The fact that we've gone over the $50,000 mark, yeah, it's very, very, very humbling," Mr Renford said. "I've always enjoyed — in other swims that I've done in years gone by — keeping my dad's memory alive, and particularly in the open water swimming community it's still a strong name, Des Renford.Mr Renford's father Des remains a celebrated Australian marathon swimmer.
