The mother of a teenager who died in a car crash in Canberra says she wasn't told her son had been missing for three days before the crash which claimed his life.
A teenager who died in a car crash last week in Canberra was under the care of the state at the time. The mother of a teenager who died while under the care of the state has described the system as broken.
She said she had been heartbroken to only receive a small bag of her son's belongings from the home, including shoes which she said were not his size. The mother said she was angry that she was not informed he was missing and said she would have known where to find him. "There is absolutely a failure here when it comes to making sure that that young person was able to live their life with full capacity to their full nourishment that they have every right to be doing," she said.
The ACT government said residential care was currently only used as last resort when other options had been exhausted. "This is a tragic situation. My thoughts are with the young person’s family and friends at this very difficult time," she said. "Over recent years, we have also invested substantially more in early support and intensive family services, including the first Aboriginal-led Functional Family Therapy program in the country," she said.
