One of the hardest-hit areas in the SA bushfire crisis has had up to 20 homes destroyed by a seemingly unstoppable inferno. 9News

About 20 properties have been destroyed in the Lithgow area, based on early estimates.

NSW RFS Comissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said a man is unaccounted for in the Dargan area near Lithgow, who was last reported to be protecting his home which is now enveloped by fire. There have been a number of emergency personnel treated for smoke inhalation and one firefighter has been admitted to hospital after being hit by a private vehicle.

"We've had a number of people have suffered lacerations and heat-related injuries throughout the day," said Mr Fitzsimmons. "We've sill got a long night ahead," he said. "The response is entirely focused on saving and protecting as many people and as much property as possible."
