Chloe Mason says she would have been homeless at the age of 15 had she not had access to a safe abortion.Chloe Mason was among thousands of Melburnians to take to the streets supporting abortion rights.Mason was among thousands of women and pro-choice protesters who rallied in Melbourne’s CBD on Saturday, in a show of solidarity after the US Supreme Court overturned the country’s abortion rights.
It was no different in Melbourne on Saturday, where protesters waved signs reading: “life starts at ejaculation, mandate vasectomies”; “not a public cervix”; “if abortion is murder, then a blowjob is cannibalism”; and “you can’t ban abortion, you can only ban safe abortion”. Among them was Katie, 25, who had an abortion when she was 18. She said the decision to terminate her pregnancy wasn’t easy, but that it helped her fulfil her own potential.“It was not an easy decision, and it’s not one that I made lightly, but I don’t regret that. It allowed me to finish my school, I got to go to university because I had an abortion.”
Pro-choice rallies were also held in other Australian cities on Saturday, following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade – a 1973 case ruling that for the past 49 years has ensured women in America had a constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy.
