The country will hold the election after being run by a caretaker government since January after Prime Minister Zoran Zaev resigned. He did so after the European Union failed to set a date for North Macedonia to begin accession talks to join the bloc.

North Macedonia will hold its first parliamentary election under its new country name this week amid an alarming spike of coronavirus cases in the small Balkan nation.A coalition government with the smaller ethnic Albanian party is likely if neither party wins enough seats

Parliament elected a temporary government consisting of members of both main political parties, with the sole aim of organising the election. It will be the first time elections are held on a weekday, after the original April 12 vote was postponed due to the pandemic. They can vote on Monday, with electoral officials and medical teams taking the ballot boxes to their homes.

But after authorities eased restrictions and reopened the borders, the country has become one of the worst affected European nations for coronavirus cases and deaths per capita. Mr Zaev also signed a friendship deal with Bulgaria, part of a push to resolve issues with neighbouring countries and prepare for EU membership.
