An MP says current foot-and-mouth control methods are simply not good enough as stories emerge of travellers cruising through customs, even after declaring things, and not having bags checked.
NSW Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders is calling for all travellers returning from Bali to have their bags inspected as efforts ramp up to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth-disease.Farmers are being encouraged to put individual biosecurity plans in placeThe disease affects pigs, cattle, goats and sheep.
"We also need to see 100 per cent of bags being inspected from those hot spot areas like Bali, if you go to Bali you should expect on return to have your bag inspected."“I think that’s the simplest, best way of making sure we have the best chance of keeping it out and keeping people aware of how important this is.
Mr Saunders did however fall short of echoing Federal Cowper MP Pat Conaghan's calls to implement a 90-day ban on non-essential travel to and from Indonesia."The tourism industry has been through hell and back so I think we need to take a cautious approach on travel bans, that's something we can keep for later on if it's required," he said.Oxley MP Melinda Pavey, NSW Deputy Premier Paul Toole and Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders use a foot bath at a dairy farm.
