NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has defended Stuart Ayres as a strong trade minister amid the escalating saga around the appointment of John Barilaro, as it was revealed Ayres signed a brief naming former bureaucrat Jenny West as the successful applicant for the New York job.reveal the deputy Liberal leader, who was then investment minister, signed the briefing note saying “after a full recruitment process, the successful candidate is Ms Jenny West” on August 17 last year.
A trail of emails shows Perrottet’s office received a final copy of the brief on August 13 last year and returned it as “noted” to the office of the chief executive of Investment NSW.In a statement, Ayres said the brief he signed “does not represent the end of the recruitment process”. “He’s a very good trade minister, he’s been a very strong investment minister. He’s been in Singapore in terms of opening our trade office there and will be joining us in India,” Perrottet said.
“I don’t understand why that did come to my office because I had no ministerial responsibility at the time for Global NSW.”
