Mr Ayres also signed off on Jenny West’s appointment to the trade role last year, despite telling parliament no suitable candidate had been found.
Mr Perrottet has repeatedly said that Mr Barilaro was chosen for the role after a first round of recruitment for theBut an upper house inquiry has revealed that Ms West was handed the role in August 2021 before having it rescinded a month later by Investment NSW chief Amy Brown. who told her the job was to become a ministerial pick and would be a “present” for someone else.
“Note the selection of Ms Jenny West as the successful candidate for the STIC – Americas role,” a section titled “Recommendations and Actions” in the note read. Ms Brown signed the note that was released in the call for papers, but Mr Perrottet did not. An email chain between Investment NSW and Mr Perrottet’s office included in the papers shows that after the agency sent his office the briefing note, the premier’s department liaison office returned it as “noted” two days later on Friday, August 13. The returned document was not included in the dossier released by Treasury.
“It is important to recognise that at the end of the first round of recruitment there was no suitable candidate identified,” Mr Ayres told parliament in June this year.
