In a rallying call to members rocked by the federal loss and a tough year in state politics, Perrottet urged the party to forget about shifting left or right.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has pulled the trigger on early preselections and called for more women, more diversity and an end to factional warfare at the Liberal Party’s highest profile meeting since the federal election wipe out.

More than 500 Liberals gathered at Rose Hill Racecourse on Saturday for the party’s annual state council, with addresses from federal deputy leader Sussan Ley, Mr Perrottet and other Liberal officials including outgoing president Philip Ruddock. “Whether the Liberal party should move left or right, that is exactly the wrong question to ask,” he told an audience. “What is needed now is not ideology — but ideas.”The premier also revealed a new plan to open preselections within two weeks, with a specific call to attract more female candidates as well as those from diverse backgrounds.

The federal MP attacked Labor’s decision to dismantle the Australian Building and Construction Commission and the flow of donations into party coffers from the militant CFMEU. She also directed an attack at a wave of teal independents who she said had been funded by vested interests.
