BREAKING: NSW has reported 12,226 new COVID-19 cases and one death. There are 746 people in hospital. Victoria has recorded 5,137 new infections and 13 fatalities. Hospitalisations are currently at 395.

There are 746 people in hospital - 121 more patients than Wednesday's numbers of 625. Sixty-three patients are in intensive care.Hospitalisations are currently at 395, a decrease from Wednesday's 397. There are 100 people are in ICU.Victoria on Wednesday reported 3,767 new COVID-19 cases, Queensland 1,589, South Australia 1,471, the ACT 138 and Tasmania 55.

The climbing infections come as Prime Minister Scott Morrison called a snap national cabinet meeting for Thursday. The PM and state leaders are expected to discuss the record-breaking case numbers, pressure on hospitals, and the overwhelming demand for tests.Prime Minister Scott Morrison and state leaders will meet on Thursday."In the course of Omicron, the issue is not the number of cases. The issue is the incidence of serious disease," the Prime Minister told reporters outside Sydney's Kirribilli House on Wednesday.

"So while we do have a high volume of cases ... there is ample capacity in our hospital system to deal with the challenges that we're presently confronted with."
