Lawyers for Constable Zachary Rolfe argue he acted in self-defence when he fatally shot 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker, as the committal hearing for the murder-accused police officer draws to a close.
The Northern Territory police officer accused of murdering an Indigenous teenager has made a final attempt to have his case thrown out of court.Key points:Prosecutors say the police officer disregarded a detailed arrest planConstable Zachary Rolfe was charged with one count of murder after the shooting death of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker in the remote NT community of Yuendumu last November.
They have argued the police officer was acting in self-defence when he fired three shots at Kumanjayi Walker during a botched attempt to arrest the teenager for breaching a court order. "It's not what the expert [witnesses] think, it's what was in my client's state of mind and what he could see and what confronted him in that extraordinary, volatile situation," he said.
"But that appears not to be the lesson learnt by the accused; indeed the lesson is the opposite," he argued.
