The New South Wales Rural Fire Service has confirmed a number of homes have been lost after a crucial back burning operation got out of control in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.
On Sunday night flames up to 70 metres high tore through several suburbs which included Bilpin where a home and business on the property have been destroyed.
RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the flare up - that saw the fire jump the Bells Line of Road - was one of the worst he's ever seen. The extent of the damage won't be confirmed until crews can safely carry out assessments across the Blue Mountains fire ground. Fire crews fear many more properties may have been lost at Mount Tomah and Mount Wilson. Image: News Corp Australia
