JUST IN: Frightening vision captures the eruption of New Zealand's White Island volcano. 9News At least one person has died:

Scientists had noticed increased activity in the last couple of weeks and had increased the alert level. However New Zealand Prime Minister did not answer questions as to why people were allowed on the island if scientists knew about increased activity."I know there will be a huge amount of concern and anxiety for those who have loved ones on or around the island at the time. I can assure them police are doing everything they can," she said.

While it was initially believed there were 100 people on or near the island at the time of the eruption, police now believe there were fewer than 50. Michael Schade a tourist who said he visited the island half an hour before it erupted took to Twitter to share his shock. A screen grab obtained on Monday, December 8, 2019, of New Zealand volcano Whakaari, or White Island, located in the Bay of Plenty, which has erupted. The volcano, located around 40km offshore of the Bay of Plenty, sent huge amounts of white smoke - most likely steam - into the air in the blast. NO ARCHIVING, EDITORIAL USE ONLYThe ash cloud can be seen from the mainland, the island is located 48km out to sea from Whakatāne in the Bay of Plenty.
