Big electricity retailers are now hitting their customers with double-digit price increases from July 1.
One of Australia’s largest energy retailers, Origin Energy, has told some customers their power bills from July 1 will be higher than theOnly weeks after the AER set the default market offer, which showed power price rises of up to, Origin emailed customers on Friday to let them know prices were going up next month.
The default market offer, or standing offer, is supposed to be a safety net for customers who do not shop around for a better deal. Origin said the average price for residential customers on variable rates would increase on July 1 by 14.4 per cent in NSW, 13.7 per cent in Queensland and 10.4 per cent in South Australia.
“We know that many Australians are doing it tough faced with higher costs of living and we encourage any Origin customers who are struggling with their energy bills to reach out to us today so that we can provide support and assistance.”A spokesman for Origin Energy said some solar customers may be paying above the default market offer but would receive a discount for providing energy into the grid.
The AER said wholesale power costs for retailers had risen 41.4 per cent in NSW, by 49.5 per cent in Queensland and 11.8 per cent in South Australia.energy retailers to tell their customers to look elsewhere or face a doubling of their billGas retailers, including Origin, have also started to advise household customers of increase in gas tariffs from July 1.The increase for one household customer of Origin Energy in Brisbane was 8.6 per cent for the first 8.
