More than 500 New South Wales residents have died due to drug overdoses for the fifth consecutive year.

For a decade, rural and regional areas in the state experienced higher rates of unintentional overdoses than in Greater Sydney.

While illicit drugs were a major contributor to overdose deaths in other states, pharmaceutical opioids and benzodiazepines were recorded as major contributors in NSW. Image: Getty
