Rookie CJ Abrams gets first start at second base as Padres take on Braves on Sunday night baseball; Yu Darvish looking to put disastrous second start behind him
The 22-year-old rookie allowed three runs on six hits, including two homers, in his first MLB start last week against the Nationals. He struck out four without walking a batter. Elder was a fifth-round pick out of Texas in 2020.The 35-year-old allowed nine runs in Tuesday’s loss in San Francisco, the second most in his 214 career starts. He recorded just five outs, tied for the shortest outing of his career, although his manager is unconcerned heading into his third start of the season.
“I think that’s one you just move on from,” Melvin said Sunday afternoon. “Tough game. It was cold, it was windy, didn’t get off to a good start. His first game was fantastic. So a veteran guy like him, I don’t think he’s gonna worry too much about that. He’s gonna go out there and pitch his game, probably more in the fashion that we saw in the first start than the second one.
